BEGINNER

Watercolor paper, colored MPO, palette knife and a couple of pieces of masking tape to hold onto corners to prevent paper moving. Instant layering and it does not require any knowledge or experience of this kind.Adding layers and sculpting in, scraping off, relayering over scraped areas creating nice transparent effects with own imagination and different direction moves with palette knife. This can be achieved in matter of a few minutes.

ADVANCED

Here , We may start thinking of particular shape, texture, shadowing, bringing a light in, or even to build entire concept at once. Also very easy approach using colored MPO , watercolor paper ( mentioning watercolor paper every time because it is easiest to start off before spending money on wooden supports where MPO works perfectly in the same mode). This technique actually is with a cloth on pointer finger and smudging in in circular motion evenly spreading the MPO on to watercolor paper or other support.MPO doesn't require any priming before painting. Priming is painting itself. Usually priming can be a light/thin coat of latex primer, however on on the watercolor paper, preferably when using wooden supports. It's always good to set your first base color to your preference or subject color requirement. Let it sit ( or fuse it and let it cool & dry for about 1h ) for a few hours then you can start your application. It all can be done at once, but in this case I want to make sure of your successful result. Once known to you how to, you'll be able to identify your approach much easier with quicker result. using applying the encaustic cold paste medium.

At Ease with Master Paste Original®Core result

The key elements for successful encaustic painting with Master Paste Original® is to pretend that it is a watercolor technique, and that will prevent of building wax in mass instead of keep wax low and taking full advantage of this encaustic medium and its properties such as : transparency, pliant, excellent plasticity, delicacy of layers, translucency ...

Comfortable and supple grip

Typically a palette knife should be inclined in a way that the tip (edge of blade) meets the substrate at about 45°.Comfortable and supple grip that allows excellent control over tip pressure and application angle without strain or discomfort.

Keeping layers low

MPO™ is best applied in thin and evenly spread layers at room temperature. Applying several layers one on top of another is a great way to achieve colorful effects, tones texture & patterns. Advanced users will appreciate more complex creation by learning to carve and shave through multiple layers.

Very basic set up of encaustic painting with Master Paste Original®

Choosing pad, substrate, support or simply material to paint on

Master Paste Original® matches with variety of supports such as masonite,MDF board, birch board, plywood ( from 3mm/1/8" to any thickness),canvas board, canvas, glass, raw ceramic, even wall.It basically adopts any material, however heat is a factor when choosing a right support is necessary for successful creation.Picture 1. is an untempered masonite board for basic setup of this encaustic creation.Acrylic gesso or simple latex primer is a good choice or painting straight away to the support is not an issue.Let it dry well as latex or gesso tend to be on surface seemingly fine and ready, but as it soaks into pad it may not be quite ready. This setup can be done on all supports except glass. 2 types of acrylic gesso Gold and Venetian Red was chosen for this encaustic art work.It is not necessary to combine colors to under prime support unless there is a reason for it.

Small increments of paste on palette mixing knife

Picture No: 3 shows how much colored paste is needed in order to keep layers low as seen on the picture No.2. After opening a can, light skimming from top of the paste is recommended to control the amount you need to apply.

Using rather small amount than too much.It can be very difficult and It is not recommended to add the paste in mass and that can lead to a difficult process for whatever heat source is going the be applied that means it will force the medium to melt instead to seal gently the pigment successfully within the paste.Bear in mind that Master Paste Original® cannot be overheated and for any misuse an artist is responsible for this action.

Entire encaustic painting can be done in cold application.Layering over is an easy method and perfectly useful for reaching desired effects and color transitions. There is no need to complete whole painting in one day, when more sophisticated process is in plan it's good to leave it for couple of hours later or next day.Quite often when aborting painting in the moment and do not intend to continue in that particular day I heat the entire painting in progress.

Applying layers with palette mixing knife is the easiest way to reach painting comfort and continuously build up your encaustic painting.

Use of fingers to smear the edges of applied colored Master Paste Original to achieve smooth transitions between colors or just an effect when necessary, however, it can also be done with palette knife as well.

Encaustic layer being applied with palette mixing knife

Another layers can be added on top of the previous ones within seconds.

Instant layering is easy after the first layers are applied .In order to keep successful transitions on encaustic painting, layers have to be in thin application, and when they are low, many can be added on top, this way encaustic painting gains its character of low profile with rich texture and patterns.

Layering-Effects-Carving

Easy way of application of colored Master Paste Original®

In order to create this picture / encaustic painting with MPO , you need a watercolor paper ( or any other support material according to your preference ) soft cloth, mixing knife ( preferably medium spatula as well ) and that would be all you need. Apply a small amount of paste on your support and by circular motion start your application. The best result is a tainted paper creating one layer when 1 color is used then apply another color and repeat as the first step. Carve lines into, smudge over, apply another color rub in ...until your picture starts to have a shape and your vision will streamline your creation. The mist is a pearl silver , very useful color and a pigment at the same time in encaustic art painting.
